The Rape Crisis Cape Town Trust is a non profit organisation that promotes an end to violence against women, specifically rape, and assists women in achieving their right to live free from violence by reducing the trauma experienced by rape survivors, encouraging reporting of rape incidents, facilitating the active engagement of communities in challenging high rape rates and advocating for a stronger criminal justice system. Our Khayelitsha counselling service provides free face-to-face counselling to survivors, family and friends and a comprehensive referral service as well as 24-hour telephone counselling, support groups for survivors and assistance to survivors preparing to take a case to trial. The person that fills this post will be responsible for the recruitment, training, supervision and support of the lay counsellors as well as for delivering social work services to clients that need the added intervention of a social worker. They will also be responsible for coordinating and attending stakeholders meeting and engagements, well as liaising with stakeholders. They will assist with data verification of cases for reporting purposes and play a part in the successful implementation of all operational plans and activities that advance the organisation as a whole.

Responsibilities

The Khayelitsha Counselling Coordinator will be based at our offices, in Iltha Park, Khayelitsha, and will be responsible for the following tasks under the supervision of the Programmes Manager:

  • The counselling project in Khayelitsha
  • Delivering social work services to clients as needed including clients at our other offices in Athlone and Observatory
  • Coordination of volunteers and students
  • Recruitment, screening, training and supervision of new volunteers
  • The development of intervention strategies for survivors of sexual violence
  • Participation in organisational research and other overarching projects
  • Counselling awareness raising
  • Facilitating support groups for survivors
  • Strategic networking
  • Providing consultancy services to other service providers on request
  • Participating in television and radio programmes as required
  • Participating in media interviews as required

Requisite Competencies:
The ideal person for this job would be someone who: has strong counselling skills, is able to write well, can deal with multiple activities in an organised and systematic way, establishes and maintains effective relationships with people at all levels, can coach and mentor others through the use of effective feedback, can keep up with the latest trends in trauma response and rape, who is concerned with their own active self-development and is able to adhere to clear values and principles.

Requisite skills:

  • Appropriate social services qualification (i.e Social Work degree)
  • Experience in NGO coordination, management and counselling
  • Experience in facilitation and/or teaching with diverse groups including professionals
  • Good networking skills
  • Passion for and commitment to gender based violence issues
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of sexual violence and gender based violence
  • Good computer literacy (MSWord, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Driving licence and own transport
  • Very good written and spoken English
  • Proficient in isiXhosa will be an advantage

Remuneration:

The salary will be between R14 500 and R16 000 per month as a total cost to company package depending on skills and experience.

Start Date:

The position is available from 3 February 2020.
